Fourth Generation (1971-1992) Microprocessors
Thousands of integrated circuits could be built on a single silicon chip then called a microprocessor, creating devices that fit in the palm of your hand. Memory, controls, and the central processing unit were all located on one chip. Microprocessors are also used for devices other than desktop computers that people use commonly. This gave way to the personal computer (PC) revolution. Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs), the mouse, and and handheld devices were developed during this period. As an improvement from earlier generations, air conditioning was not required to use these computers.
